Dressi opens new shop in Gosforth

A new exclusive dress shop is opening in Salter’s Road Gosforth with the aim of helping women and girls look their best at social events.  With school proms now being enjoyed by many teenagers, the right advice on selecting the perfect outfit has never been more crucial.

The end of year school prom is seen by many teenage girls as the most important social event of their lives.  More than 85% of schools in the UK now have a prom night and our region’s schools are no exception.  With prom night now costing UK parents £90 million a year and the average spend on the all-important prom dress reported by The Guardian newspaper as £220 – prom night can be expensive.

Research in 2016, by retailer Simply Be, discovered that:

  • The total cost of a prom night in the UK has risen by 72% in the previous five years.
  • The average spend on hair was £62 with 78% of girls visiting a hair salon.
  • 62% of girls had a professional manicure.
  • 32% of girls had their make-up professionally applied for the event.

The right dress can create a night to remember for all the right reasons, while conversely, a fashion faux pas is the stuff of any girl’s nightmares.  So, with the stakes so high, just how far are north east girls prepared to go for that dream dress and what’s the advice from the experts?

On the ball north east girls are already posting their dresses on social media and marking them as ‘reserved’ to stop their classmates buying the same outfit.  Others fall for online scams offering counterfeit copies of expensive designer gowns at discount prices.  These dresses often arrive poorly made and looking very little like the original design they have been copied from, leading to more expense for pressured parents and heartbreak for stressed-out daughters.

Ruby Rogers from Morpeth, 16, says, “All my friends have been talking about the prom since Christmas.  Some of them have already bought their dress.  I’m really worried about finding something special that will suit me as I’m really tall and very slim.  There are so many different styles – it’s hard to choose the right one.  I see my prom night as my first chance to really be seen as an adult.  Getting the outfit wrong would be a total disaster!”

Julie Blackie from www.Dressi.co.uk has some advice for girls in our region looking forward to their prom night later this year:

“It’s all about planning and preparation. Start looking at styles you like right away and   try on as many dresses as possible – even ones you might not usually try.

Book important appointments now with hairdressers, nail technicians and beauticians as slots are difficult to find if you leave it too late and crucially agree your budget with your parents so that you know what you can or can’t afford.”

Although Julie already has a successful, specialist online fashion presence at www.Dressi.co.uk, she is opening her first shop in Gosforth to help the region’s party and prom goers get the best possible quality clothing at an affordable price.

“Our online store is very popular but we wanted to offer a more personal service to the young women of the north east. Nothing beats seeing, touching and trying on a dress before the big night. Our shop has specialist consultants who will be able to advise on current trends, colours and styles that will suit everyone and their budget.”

Dressi’s new shop at 149 Salters’ Road, Gosforth NE3 1DU opens on Saturday 10th March and between 9 – 5 pm.  Mums, dads and prom queens over 18 years old will be welcomed with a refreshing glass of Prosecco. Expect a party atmosphere with expert advice available all day.
