Newcastle Mela returns for Bank Holiday weekend with two days of South Asian culture and celebration
The Newcastle Mela, the North East’s premier celebration of South Asian culture and diversity, returns to Exhibition Park this August Bank Holiday, Sunday 30th and Monday 31st August, promising two days of music, dance, food, culture and family entertainment.
Now in its 32nd year, the free, family-friendly festival is expected to attract up to 40,000 visitors from across the region and beyond. Organised by Newcastle Asian Art and Music, the Mela celebrates the rich and diverse cultures of Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and other South Asian communities through a packed programme of live music, dance, street food, workshops and family activities.
Once again proudly presented with Newcastle Building Society as headline sponsor, this year’s Mela will feature an impressive line-up of established and emerging artists, including Jassi Sidhu, Raxstar, Chalo Baithak, Mazhar Rahi, Sahara and Zack Knight.
A major highlight of the 2026 programme will be Rising from the East, a special commission by Newcastle Asian Arts & Music bringing together some of the North East’s finest Indian performers for a vibrant celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage.
Featuring Breeze George, Madhura Godbole, Mi Marathi Dhol & Tasha, Kalakshetra and Spice of South, the spectacular showcase will take audiences on a journey through different Indian regions, rhythms and traditions.
Performers will take to the stage individually before coming together for a colourful and energetic finale, combining classical dance, Bollywood, Marathi and South Indian traditions with the unmistakable sound and beat of Punjabi dhol.
The Mela experience extends far beyond the main stage. Visitors can sample a wide range of South Asian street food, browse stalls offering henna, jewellery and traditional clothing, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the funfair.
Community groups and cultural organisations will also be showcasing their work, while workshops and free activities will provide entertainment for visitors of all ages.

The celebrations will begin with Mela in the City, a free preview event at Grey’s Monument on Saturday 29th August from 11am to 4pm, delivered in partnership with NE1. Visitors can enjoy live performances and cultural activities ahead of the main festival weekend.
Alongside Newcastle Building Society, the Mela is supported by Newcastle City Council, Unison Northern, Arts Council England,The Army and the Freemen of Newcastle upon Tyne.
