A wine revolution

Newcastle’s latest fun, pop-up wine bar is set to encourage friendly rivalry with our neighbours across the English Channel.

Guest Wines, the brainchild of Kelvyn and Ruth Guest from Whitley Bay are gaining a growing reputation for interesting and fun events where wines from all over the world are showcased.

They have already appeared at the Eat Festival and are preparing for an evening dinner with TV wine expert Oz Clarke.  Their latest event will see their pop-up wine bar taking over the Mezzanine of McKenna’s Bistro at The Northern Stage in Newcastle on October 10th.

Kelvyn said: “Our last VinArchy event was held in a financial advisor’s office in Jesmond and had a distinctly punky feel to it. Our next one follows a similar theme, although this time, all the wines shall be presented blindgetting England to take on France in “A Wine Riot.”

The couple met on holiday in Peru 11 years ago and bonded over their shared passion for wine. Realising that they could make a career from their mutual love of wine tasting, they decided to learn more about the subject. As a result, they studied to earn internationally recognised Wine and Spirit Education Trust qualifications and have worked in vineyards and wineries in South Africa, Portugal, France and England to learn how wine is produced.

Ruth added: “It’s a journey of discovery and that’s what we’re hoping to inspire and share through our events and tastings. It’s not just about drinking it, it’s about understanding better what’s in your glass.”

Participants at the pop-up wine tasting evening will be able to learn about English and French wines and sample a variety to suit different palates.

“We want to bring good wine to the people, by breaking down barriers and taking you on a journey. Our pop-up nights are fun and informative, exploring a variety of wines to find out more about what’s right for you. Its about helping people make the right choices to suit themselves.”
