Ashington’s much-loved Cycle Hub is changing gears, pumping up the tyres and setting off on an exciting new ride as it joins the Full Circle Food Project. With a fresh burst of energy and a steady pair of hands on the handlebars, the Hub is gearing up to keep the wheels spinning for the community, helping more people get back in the saddle and enjoy the ride towards a healthier, greener Ashington.
The Hub recently transferred from Cycling 4 Everyone to Full Circle Food Project, ensuring the long-term stability and growth of a community resource that has already supported hundreds of local people.
It will very much be business as usual as The Hub will continue to offer safer riding sessions and adult cycle lessons, guided rides, bike safety checks, repairs and servicing, as well as affordable upcycled bicycles. It will also remain a welcoming space for volunteers and community events.
By bringing the Cycle Hub under its umbrella, Full Circle Food Project will now be able to connect cycling with its wider work tackling food inequality, improving health and empowering local people. Based in Hirst Park, the charity sees the Hub as a natural extension of its mission to build a healthier, greener and more resilient community.
Michelle Brannigan, CEO of Full Circle Food Project, said:
“The Ashington Cycle Hub has already made a real difference to so many local people. Bringing it into Full Circle Food Project means we can protect what’s been built and help it grow. We want to link cycling with our wider work around health, food and sustainability, and make sure it’s accessible to everyone. This is about building on the fantastic work of Cycling 4 Everyone and taking it to the next level.”
Cycling 4 Everyone has been instrumental in establishing and nurturing the Hub creating opportunities for families and individuals to learn to ride safely, repair bikes and access affordable refurbished cycles.
The move also supports Ashington’s broader ambitions around active travel and carbon reduction, particularly following recent investment in rail links and cycling infrastructure, with backing from Ashington Town Council.
To celebrate the new chapter, a Community Relaunch Event will take place on 14 April 2026. The day will include free bike checks, guided rides, family activities and the chance to find out more about volunteering. Residents from across Ashington and South East Northumberland are warmly invited to come along and see how cycling can support healthier lifestyles and a greener future for the town.
The relaunch marks a clear commitment from Full Circle Food Project to position the Cycle Hub as a long-term community asset, grow participation in cycling, welcome new volunteers and increase awareness of its affordable upcycled bikes.
“We’re really excited to welcome everyone back to the Hub,” said Michelle. “Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist, a family on a Sunday ride, or someone hopping on a bike for the first time in years, there’s something for everyone. Let’s keep the wheels turning and make Ashington an even more bike-friendly community.”
