Jamie Bell, Frontman of The Baldy Holly Band, Takes Rock ‘n’ Roll Mission to the North East
Jamie Bell, the charismatic singer of Newcastle based The Baldy Holly Band, is on a mission to revive the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll in the North East of England. As the frontman of the band, Jamie brings a unique blend of passion and energy to the stage, captivating audiences with his love for the iconic Buddy Holly and the vibrant era of the 1950s.
Reflecting on his early exposure to rock ‘n’ roll, Jamie recalls receiving a Buddy Holly box set as a Christmas gift at the tender age of eight. Despite initial disappointment compared to the trendy gadgets of his peers, the box set ignited his love for rock ‘n’ roll. By the age of nine, he picked up his first guitar, drawn to the simplicity of the lyrics and melodies that defined the genre.
Jamie’s musical journey took a public turn when he began performing in school assemblies at the age of 10. The positive reception fuelled his confidence, leading him later in life to create a tongue-in-cheek YouTube persona named “Baldy Holly.” The unexpected popularity of his videos spurred the formation of The Baldy Holly Band, a group that pays homage to rock ‘n’ roll’s roots while crafting their unique sound.
The Baldy Holly Band’s popularity extends beyond the North East, with the group completing five successful U.S. tours. Primarily touring the Midwest, the band has performed in iconic venues, and taken part in the Winter Dance Party tour celebrations in Clear Lake where Buddy played his final show in 1959 at the Surf Ballroom. Hours later, came the tragic plane crash – the day the music died.
Building on these U.S. tours, Jamie has established connections with Buddy Holly’s family, including the daughter of Buddy’s brother Larry. Buddy’s niece, Sherry Holly remains in touch with Jamie, and is set to join the band on a UK tour in early September, celebrating Buddy Holly’s birthday. Dates in Scotland and Sheffield will be sandwiched between a three-night run at the Forest Hall Conservative Club near Newcastle.
In addition to the September tour, The Baldy Holly Band has exciting events lined up for music fans. Renowned artist Vince Eager will headline an event at the Forest Hall Conservative Club on 3rd February on the exact date that Buddy Holly was killed in the fateful air crash. Vince, who worked with legendary figures like Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent, will share insights into his illustrious career and perform alongside The Baldy Holly Band.
Tickets for upcoming events, including the February show with Vince Eager and the September tour with Sherry Holly, will be available soon from the Forest Hall Con Club.
