Bev Spans Tyne With Licensed Clients

Nov 9, 2024

Wallsend-based Aspire Licensing has just assisted their latest client in securing an alcohol license for a new bar, which sits directly across from the site of their very first client from seven years ago. Though separated by time and the iconic River Tyne, the success of both ventures highlights Aspire’s lasting impact in the hospitality industry.

Based in the historic Wallsend Town Hall, Aspire Licensing specialises in securing licenses for pubs, clubs, restaurants, events, festivals and other hospitality establishments.

Run by Beverley Smith, Aspire Licensing works with local hoteliers and businesses, ranging from bars and restaurants to convenience stores. The firm ensures that all necessary licenses are submitted to local authorities, including premises licenses and staff personal licenses, ensuring compliance with local laws. While Aspire primarily operates in the North East, their services extend across England and Wales, but not  Scotland, which has different licensing regulations.

Their latest client is Anthony Hepburn from Tavern on the Tyne situated next to the Swing Bridge on the Gateshead side of the river while just opposite is her longest serving client, restaurateurs Sambuca’s based in Newcastle and locations across the north of England.

Operator of Sambuca’s Hadi Ali said: “We put our trust in Aspire when Bev was starting out and since then we have grown too and continued to use her knowledge and expertise.”

Beverley explains, “We handle everything from the initial application submission to managing objections that may arise. We aim to simplify the process for our clients, whether that involves amending applications or adding extra conditions to ensure approval. Our goal is to make the licensing process as smooth and stress-free as possible.”

In addition to securing licenses for hospitality businesses, Aspire Licensing also works with outdoor event organisers and hot food takeaways. The company addresses potential challenges such as planning issues and environmental health concerns.

Beverley adds, “Some areas, like Wallsend High Street, may face stricter controls due to cumulative impact zones, especially when there are already many off-licenses or takeaways. We thoroughly check whether a premises falls within such zones and tailor our approach accordingly.”

Aspire Licensing’s success is bolstered by Beverley’s 20 years of experience working in the legal sector and close relationships with local authorities. “We have established trust with councils and the police, enabling us to address their concerns and negotiate solutions, often avoiding the need for formal hearings. We pride ourselves on making the process less daunting for our clients.”

Although anyone can apply for a licence themselves, Beverley explains why they should turn to Aspire Licensing instead of handling applications independently. “Mistakes in the application process can be costly. If a client fails to advertise correctly or misses a step, they may have to start over, pay additional fees, and potentially face delays. We ensure everything is done right the first time, saving time and money.”

Anthony Hepburn agreed,” The rules and legislation relating to licensing can be a minefield. We’re delighted with the service the team at Aspire have delivered and we’re looking forward to operating knowing that we have done everything by the book.”
