Mel and Teddy Take on 100-Mile Cancer Fundraising Challenge
A Newbiggin by the Sea woman is taking on a 100-mile walking challenge with her loyal dog Teddy after experiencing first-hand the devastating impact cancer can have on a family.
Mel Jackson and Teddy are taking part in the Walk 30 Miles for Cancer challenge, but the pair have decided that 30 miles simply isn’t enough.
Instead, Mel and her four-legged companion will be aiming to walk an incredible 100 miles, with a target of raising £500 to support cancer causes.
For Mel, the challenge is deeply personal.
Her life partner, Stu, was diagnosed with cancer in January 2024 and, tragically, passed away just one day later.
“Stu was diagnosed on a Saturday and passed away on Sunday. That’s how fast it can happen,” said Mel.
“People don’t recognise the symptoms, and by the time they do, it’s often too late. We need more research, more funding, and more awareness of all types of cancer.”
Over the past two years, Mel and Teddy have taken part in fundraising walks supporting pancreatic cancer causes. This year, they are widening their support to help people affected by cancer across the board.
Sadly, cancer continues to affect people close to Mel, with family members, friends and former colleagues having been diagnosed, undergoing treatment or, heartbreakingly, losing their lives to the disease.
“I feel very strongly that I need to do something meaningful,” added Mel. “If we can raise money and awareness at the same time, then hopefully our efforts can make a difference.”
Mel and Teddy will be completing their walks along the prom at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, with Teddy proving once again to be his owner’s loyal and energetic walking companion.
While the official challenge is 30 miles, Mel admits that she and Teddy have never been ones to do things by halves.
“Thirty miles is far too easy for Teddy and me, so we’re going for 100!”
Mel is hoping that friends, family and members of the local community will get behind the challenge and help the pair reach their £500 fundraising target.
Every donation, however large or small, will help support the vital work being carried out to help people affected by cancer, while also helping to raise awareness of a disease that continues to touch so many lives.
