Coming up from down under – (r)evolutionary development for top executives

A NORTHUMBERLAND woman has returned home from the sunshine of Australia with a new handle on what makes people tick and why offices don’t always run as smoothly as they should.
Entrepreneur Clare Robinson, who is originally from Morpeth and now lives near Berwick, will be sharing some of the secrets to business leaders, managers and HR professionals when she launches the Human Instincts at Work programme through her company Green Elephant Coaching (GEC). The programme journey will start with the launch of a two-day leadership training programme held at Edinburgh Zoo in November.
It’s an apt venue to introduce the business, which examines human nature and instincts and looks at how we behave as a species compared to chimpanzees – which delegates will be able to study at the zoo. By examining why we behave as we do, GEC equips managers with the tools to get more out of their staff and overcome problems in the workplace.
GEC is licensed to use Human Instincts at Work by founder and author Andrew O’Keeffe of Human Instinct in Australia. He worked with Dr Jane Goodall, an international expert whose Institute studies chimpanzee behaviour, to look at how business leaders can direct their staff’s human instincts so they perform better. Andrew is travelling to the UK for GEC’s launch at Edinburgh Zoo.
Clare, who is the UK’s only Accredited Practitioner of Hardwired Humans, said: “I am very excited to bring this work to the UK as it has been successfully running in Australia for the past seven years, helping clients like National Australia Bank, Symantec and Thales.
“It’s not a new fancy technique or tool with new words or phrases for old ways to get things done. It’s a psychology based method of working with people as it’s only in the last 250 years that we have moved from being hunter-gatherers and villagers to working in office and factories. Offices are not our natural habitat; we carry with us the basic nature of what it means to be human conditioned from our ancestral setting.”
Clare, who initially worked in marketing after leaving school, set up her first business in web design and internet marketing during the dot com boom in the late 1990s. She was fortunate to sell up before the bubble burst and then headed for some Australian sunshine. She also ran a fitness franchise with her partner and worked in HR in Australia.
““I was running large scale change management projects and I became interested in the whole psychology of why people do what they do,” said Clare. “I have always been fascinated with human and animal behaviours and questioned why things happen the way they do, which is why I studied psychology for many years. I’m delighted that this unique leadership training programme gives me the chance to marry my passion for human and animal psychology with my business and pass these skills and observations onto senior management executives.”
“Over the years I have taken a number of courses and I’m a Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistics, an Accredited Strengths Assessor and the only Accredited Practitioner in Human Instincts in the UK. This journey of owning businesses, moving around, learning and experiencing was behind my decision to found GEC.”
In addition to the leadership programme in Edinburgh, Green Elephant Coaching also offer in house bespoke company training, change management courses and project specific solutions using the Human Instincts at Work model.
