The Mayor of Blyth Town Council, Councillor Warren Taylor has thanked residents and community groups for battling the wind and the rain to make Blyth a greener town.
More than 1400 trees were planted at Meggie’s Burn, an area that has been identified as suitable for extensive tree planting which will allow them to grow and develop to their full potential without future worries regarding size. Two hundred each of seven varieties: Alder, Hawthorne, Larch, Scots Pine, Poplar, Blackthorn and Oak were planted which will form a small woodland with a bonus to wildlife, especially birds both resident and migratory. A wildflower mix could also be added to further enhance the biodiversity of the area in the future.
Individuals and volunteers from groups and businesses including Blyth Community Volunteers, Friends of Ridley Park, Blyth Links Conservation Group, Axminster Tools and Machinery (North Shields), Blyth Riverside Project and Dino Tots Childcare donned wellingtons and raincoats to help plant the saplings.
“We’ve had almost 200 people come down to Meggie’s Burn to plant these trees including a huge number of children. It’s wonderful that the people of Blyth have shown such commitment to our green environment and will be able to say in future years: “I planted that tree.” I’m very proud of everyone’s contribution,” said Mayor Warren Taylor.
