Dance festival donates to harvest festival

Sep 15, 2014

IMG_0087 copy 2The People’s Kitchen Newcastle is raving with enthusiasm about the latest donation they’ve received. As ever, in the autumn, an army of schools, churches and kind hearted individuals’ give freely to celebrate the Harvest Festival time, however this donation is from an unexpected but very welcome source.

Shindig has been a great bastion of northern nightlife and one of the longest running club nights in the UK since 1992. The Newcastle promoters have been producing events in creative spaces across the city bringing an A-Z of musical talent and “re-crafting, re-inventing and remixing” Tyneside club culture.

Despite their formidable size and reputation, Shindig events still have the buzz and intimacy of a secret warehouse party, and are known for breaking new artists rather than putting on the flavour of the month. Shindig focuses on innovative house and techno, and over the last few years have found a new home in the city’s raw industrial space Warehouse34 located in Hoults Yard.

The music promoters have been hard at work collecting donations at events such as the popular 7000 person strong May Bank Holiday ShindigXXII Festival held on Newcastle’s Quayside and in total so far this year, £1255 has been raised. Co-Director and Shindig founder Scott Bradford said:

“ “There were several key factors in Shindig’s decision to work with The People’s Kitchen. We were looking for a local charity that relied on voluntary help, and one that received little or no government funding, The Peoples Kitchen ticked these boxes and more.”

People’s Kitchen trustee, Peter Samuel was delighted that Shindig had decided to support the work of the charity.

“It’s very refreshing to see young people caring so much about vulnerable people in their city. It’s so easy to forget that while most of us enjoy the nightlife of Newcastle, there are people who need our help, compassion and friendship.

“Our volunteers serve around 37,000 meals every year and carry out a huge range of other work including tending our allotment, organising supplies in the food warehouse, driving, cooking, serving, listening and signposting for accommodation and health care. In addition, there is a rambling club, a clothing programme, Street Outreach Volunteers and a team to deal with administration & recruitment. Every one at The People’s Kitchen is a volunteer and we receive no government funding, we rely on kind donations such as this from Shindig.”

Shindig Co-Owner & Director Neil Bainbridge was also pleased to support The People’s Kitchen:

“It was fantastic to be able to help raise awareness for this worthwhile charity, we always get a large amount of people asking for free tickets to all our events, so turning that into a worthy cause made perfect sense. We are looking forward to supporting the Peoples Kitchen in the near future and into 2015 too.”
