Every Little Helps as Rotary help fund soccer team

Oct 1, 2019

A Rowlands Gill supermarket has teamed up with their local Rotary Club to help fund the football experience of a life time for a young Ponteland girls football team.

Ron Stroud of the Rotary Club of Blaydon, Ryton and Whickham was presented with a host of foreign coins by Tesco in Rowlands Gill for the club to add to the fund-raising efforts of Ponteland Middle School’s Under 11 girls’ soccer team.

The team will be playing in the Football Cup Barcelona, an international youth football tournament for boys and girls, held in the Salou and Cambrils area in the south of Barcelona in October. Around 100 teams from 10 countries will participate in the tournament. The Ponteland school team qualified as they won the English knock out competition, which took place over a two-year period.

Ron’s granddaughter Lucy Dodd is playing in goal for the team and is looking forward to the experience. The donation from Tesco will be added to the fundraising efforts of youngsters from Clover Hill Primary School in Whickham who are part of a Rotakids group. RotaKids is an exciting way for children 12 and under to engage in important, lively activities that will make a positive difference in their school, their local community and globally.

Ron said: “It’s a very exciting time for the Ponteland youngsters and everyone at the Rotary Club of Blaydon, Ryton and Whickham and our Rotakids wish them the very best of success and hope that they will bring back the “world cup” to England, something our national team hasn’t been able to do in more than 50 years.”
