Radio Northumberland’s New Wave With Newman show has asked listeners over the past three months to vote for their all time punk tracks. Every Monday in December the Festive 79 will be counted down and played to the station’s ever growing audience.
Punk presenter Keith Newman said,
“This is the highlight of the year for my listeners and myself. I can’t give anything away but there are favourites on my show that I have to play almost every week otherwise I get complaints. I’m sure they will do very well up amongst more established acts.”
And it isn’t just the big boys who are featuring in the show, alongside The Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols and Clash, local bands like Morpeth’s The Half Cuts and Ashington’s Logoz look set to make their mark on the fun, festive chart.
Station Manager, Stewart Allen, a veteran of more than 30 years in local radio, was delighted that the show was attracting listeners to the Bedlington based station.
“This is a very niche show which is attracting listeners from all across the UK and abroad. The show has grown week on week and a lot of famous punk stars have visited Keith in the studio for interviews and listen in at home. We have listeners as far away as Tasmania and California as well as regulars in Holland and Croatia.”
Radio Northumberland has been providing 24 hour Internet programming since it formed in January 2012. It has gained a reputation for community involvement as well as broadcasting music and talk based programming. Now, an application has been made to Ofcom for a licence that will enable them to broadcast on an FM radio frequency to the people of Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth, Cramlington and Morpeth.
New Wave with Newman airs every Monday and Friday evening at 9pm.
The success of Radio Northumberland isn’t just about having good presenters and programme schedules. The station is now looking for people to volunteer with specific skills such as accountancy, admin, telephone answering, office skills and facilities management.
