Generous Freemasons from Northumberland have donated a staggering £2400 to help fight the battle against women’s cancers.
The cheque was presented to three businesswomen from the Alnwick area who are undertaking a gruelling cycle challenge from London to Paris.
Amazingly, before they decided to do the 240 mile, three day ride, none of them had ridden very far on a bicycle making the journey an even greater personal challenge.
The three in training cyclists, marketing expert Avril Scott from Foxton, Utility Warehouse consultant Jacqueline Brewster from Alnwick and Jane McHugh, hotelier from the Red Lion in Alnmouth discussed the idea of the ride at a network business meeting at Alnmouth Golf Club where they reguarly meet and decided to support women’s cancer charities. Monies raised will be equally shared amongst Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.
Stuart Cairns representing Northumberland Freemasons was delighted to present the cheque for £2500 to the intrepid and brave cyclists. He was joined at the presentation by freemasons from a number of lodges in Alnwick who were also keen to show their support.
“Last year, Northumberland Freemasons gave more than £300,000 to local charities and good causes in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland,” said Stuart.
“In this particular case, we were impressed with the challenge that was to be undertaken; the fact that the team aren’t trained cyclists and are doing it because it is such a worthy cause and means so much to them.”
The cycle ride starts on 6th September in London and the pedal pushing team are hoping to raise more than £6000 for their three charities.
“This kind donation will really help us reach our fundraising target. With every turn of the pedals we will be nearer to Paris and raising money for causes close to all of our hearts,” said Jacqueline.
