Heartfelt Donation from Northumberland Freemasons to CHUF

Nov 15, 2024

Northumberland Freemasons, in partnership with Northumberland Mark Master Masons, have announced an incredible donation of £50,000.00 from Richard Henry Holmes Charity and £103.035.00 from the Mark Benevolent Fund to the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF) at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. The heartfelt contribution is dedicated to the memory of Gordon Craigs, a well-respected member of the Northumberland Freemasons, who passed away suddenly in July.

A presentation and dinner were held at Blyth Masonic Hall to commemorate this significant gift. CHUF held a special place in the hearts of Gordon and his wife Barbara, as the Unit provided invaluable support to their first grandson. This donation is not only a tribute to Gordon’s dedication to Freemasonry but also a gesture of gratitude to CHUF for its compassionate and life-saving work. The event was attended by representatives from CHUF, including Charlotte Campbell and Alicia Clovis-Mothalib, as well as Ian Clark, Deputy President of the Mark Benevolent Fund (MBF), who attended on behalf of the MBF.

Gordon Craigs was a committed Freemason for 45 years, beginning his journey with Lodge Palatine No. 5345 in 1979. Over the decades, he held various prominent positions, including the role of Lodge Secretary and Treasurer. His commitment to Freemasonry in Northumberland was unparalleled, with multiple senior appointments.

Ian Craigs, head of Northumberland Freemasons, and Raymond Arthur Walton, head of Northumberland Mark Master Masons, expressed profound gratitude for Gordon’s remarkable legacy, which they hope will inspire others to follow his footsteps. “Gordon’s unwavering dedication, his service, and his love for Freemasonry have left an indelible mark on our community,” said Ian Craigs. Raymond Walton added. “We are honoured to make this donation in his memory, knowing it will bring hope and healing to young lives at CHUF.

Our donation to CHUF embodies Gordon Craigs’ spirit of service and his lifelong commitment to supporting those in need. His legacy will be remembered and cherished by his brethren and Companions across all Masonic Orders.”

Charlotte Campbell, Director of Operations and Fundraising at CHUF said:

“When we were approached by the Northumberland Freemasons about them putting in an application in support of Chuf’s Seven Appeal to the Mark Benevolent Fund, we had no idea that it would result in such a hugely generous amount. Together with support from the Richard Henry Holmes Benevolent Fund this money will enable the purchase of the next major piece of echocardiogram equipment in our capital appeal. The fact that this donation has been made in memory of such a wonderful supporter is truly touching. This new state of the art equipment will make such a difference to Heart Heroes just like Gordon’s grandson for years to come. We simply cannot thank you all enough!”

Northumberland Freemasons buildings can be found throughout the Province, including in Alnwick, Amble, Ashington, Bedlington, Bellingham, Berwick, Blyth, Byker, Cramlington, Haltwhistle, Hexham, Mickley, Morpeth, Newbiggin, Jesmond, Newcastle, North Shields, Seahouses, Seaton Delaval, Shiremoor, Throckley, Wallsend, Whitley Bay, and Wylam.
