Students from Hexham Priory School paid a visit to Cramlington based community radio station, Radio Northumberland for a behind the scenes tour and ended up making their own show.
Five students and two members of staff chose their own special pieces of music that ranged from Lindisfarne to Little Mix. One of the pupils, Megan was so impressed with her Bon Jovi track that she sang from start to finish.
Teacher Liam Robson was very impressed with the station’s set up which broadcasts to the whole of Northumberland and beyond via the internet.
“ We simply asked for a tour and were amazed to find ourselves live on air. We were monitoring the listener’s locations and people from all over the world were tuning in on the Internet. It was a really valuable learning experience.”
Director of the station and it’s punk and new wave presenter, Keith Newman said:
“At Radio Northumberland we’ve been providing 24 hour Internet programming since it formed in January 2012. We’ve gained a reputation for community involvement as well as broadcasting music and talk based programming. The school visit was typical of how we try to integrate all parts of the community from the very young to our more elderly listeners.”
The success of Radio Northumberland isn’t just about having good presenters and programme schedules. The station is now looking for people to volunteer with specific skills such as accountancy, admin, telephone answering, office skills and facilities management.
