Jen Accounts For Her Volunteering Time

Jul 5, 2019

They say “a volunteer is better than 10 pressed men” and never has that nautical saying been truer for a North East charity.

Nautical charity, The Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) have a new treasurer in the form of Jennifer Mitchelson, Planning and Resources Manager at Newcastle College.

Jen heard about the charity’s need for a new treasurer from Head of Unit Angela Carrington and after attending an open evening and a trip on one of the unit’s vessels, Jen was firmly anchored to the idea of volunteering.

“I love boats due to childhood holidays and weekends spent sailing round the west coast of Scotland on my late Papa Macleod’s boats. You don’t necessarily appreciate these things as a child but looking back I understand now how lucky I was. More recently, I’ve enjoyed some time out on my dad’s yacht and started to learn more about the science behind sailing rather than just “doing as you’re told.

 “I’m excited to join the MVS, both as Treasurer and as an active member as I get to build on my knowledge and skills; spend time out on the water and give something back to the local community.”

Nationally, the MVS has more than 25 active units spread around the UK coastline at major port & river areas, with more units planned. Northumbria Unit is based in Benton and at St Peter’s Marina although their vessels can operate from the Tweed to the Tees. Last year, they were deployed extensively at the Sunderland Tall Ships Race.

The aim of the MVS is to keep the country’s maritime traditions alive. Practical training in seamanship, small boat handling, engineering and communications helps to achieve this.

Membership is open to both men and women irrespective of ethnic origin or disability from the age of 18.

Head of Unit, Volunteer Officer Angela Carrington said;

“Jen is a massive asset to the unit and her accounting skills are invaluable. We are looking for other people from all walks of life to join us. You don’t need to know a lot about boats as we will provide training.”
