New team at the helm for maritime volunteers
A new team is at the helm of the Northumbria Unit of the Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS)
The new man at the top is Mark Tiffin from South Shields and he is assisted by Angela Carrington from Newcastle.
Mark is a 3rd officer in navigation with shipping company Maersk Line while Angela runs a successful photography business in Newcastle.
The Maritime Volunteer Service is a uniformed, voluntary organisation, founded in 1994 with full charitable status with its patron being HRH Prince Michael of Kent.
The organisation has more than 30 active units spread around the UK coastline at major port & river areas, with more units planned. Northumbria Unit is based at Newcastle Business Village in Benton, but also uses meeting spaces kindly donated by the Mission for Seaman at South Shields and South Tyneside College. In addition, afloat training takes place from St Peter’s Marina in Newcastle’s east end.
The aim of the MVS is to keep the country’s maritime traditions alive. Practical training in seamanship, small boat handling, engineering and communications helps to achieve this. The unit has a 21ft Delta RIB which can often be seen on the river.
“I’m looking forward to building up a strong unit in the area, membership is open to both men & women irrespective of ethnic origin or disability from the age of 18 and new members are always welcome – no experience necessary as we will train them.”
