Blyth Town Council’s Mayor, Councillors and Town Clerk visited The Oaks Care Home in Durban Street, Blyth to hand over a cheque for £1,460 to fund their ‘Getting to Know You’ project.
The Mighty Oaks, a Friends group who are newly-formed to support projects at the home, applied for a Community Grant from Blyth Town Council and were awarded the full amount needed to start a new project with the Dales School. ‘Getting to Know You’ has developed from conversations with care staff, residents and teachers and will see a six week music and singing project being delivered at the home. Activities such as creative writing, music and rhythm, singing, drawing and storytelling will give residents at the home and children from the school the chance to find out about each other, where they are from, what they enjoy doing and what they have in common. Family and friends of the residents and children will be invited to come along to one of the sessions and finally a piece of music and song will be created to be performed at The Oaks and The Dales School as part of a special celebration event.
The Mayor, Cllr Warren Taylor, said “It’s wonderful as Mayor and Town Councillor to be able to support this inter-generational project at The Oaks Care Home. I know how much joy this will bring, both to the residents and the children at the Dales school.”
Chair of the Community Development and Community Funding Sub Committees, Cllr Kath Nisbet, said “It is a great pleasure to give The Oaks project a grant for a great cause for their residents who will benefit and it has been lovely to meet everyone today”.
Activities coordinator Angela Hedley said that The Mighty Oaks can’t thank the Town Council enough for approving the application, the intergenerational nature of the project is going to make a real difference to residents’ lives.
Staff at The Oaks will be keeping the Town Council up to date with developments which you can see on the Community page www.blythtowncouncil.org.uk
