Properties in Farne Road and Sunnyside Crescent have been given a new lease of life thanks to a partnership between Warm Zone, Dyson and not-for-profit housing provider Four Housing. The major home improvement investment scheme will help residents stay warm and save money this winter.
Warm Zones CIC is a not for profit organisation that aims to improve energy efficiency in the home, reduce fuel bills and provide warmer, healthier homes by supplying loft and cavity wall insulation.
Properly insulated homes can lead to major savings on energy bills. The work in Spittal has saved each householder, on average, around £100 per year in their energy bills, with an equivalent total carbon saving of a staggering 6,731 tonnes.
The work involved removing old, damp insulation from walls and replacing it with Isothane, a material that has proven to be particularly effective at protecting buildings in areas with high levels of airborne moisture such as those found near the sea in Spittal. A number of the properties were then rendered to protect them further from the effects of harsh winter weather and to cosmetically improve their appearance.
Warm Zones’ Andrew Baty explained that the work was made easier due to the proactive partnership with Dyson and Four Housing.
“These homes were not the easiest of properties to insulate due to their original construction. The sea air had damaged the masonry, and adversely affected much of the original insulation material over the years. Our planning meetings took a lot into consideration such as timings and which materials would be best for the job, and I’m pleased to say that the teamwork paid off.”
“We’ve had some excellent feedback from residents and feel that these two homes are shining examples of the work we’ve done together. We hope Farne Road will be seen as a beacon of good practice. We will use our experiences here to make other hard-to-treat homes in Northumberland warmer and healthier to live in.”
Carl Dickson, Maintenance Surveyor for Four Housing added:
“It is our aim at Four Housing to provide good quality homes and to improve the lives of those who live in them. The insulation work that has taken place on Sunnyside Crescent and Farne Road will enable our customers to reduce their energy use, as well as helping them to keep their homes warm this winter.”
