Newcastle record label looks for a modern woman with the erogenous factor.

The discovery of a long lost TV appearance by an emerging new wave band has prompted a Sunderland based musician to revisit his distant past and rerecord some of the songs from his youth. However, the new recordings need a female lead singer and with the help of a Newcastle record label, the search is on for the next punk princess.

When musician Steve Cunningham heard about the video he realised that his label, BoomChang Records, was the right vehicle to bring the tracks up to date and promote the project. Steve who played bass with the iconic North East band, Lindisfarne from 1989 until 1994, is also keen to find the right person to front the new version of the band.

The original band, The Erogenous Zones had a young Trevor Sewell on keyboards, a far cry from the journey the multi-award winning musician has had since his days with the new wave electro pop band. He’s worked as a session musician with a diverse range of international artists and with his own material and band he’s won numerous accolades and awards including the prestigious best blues song at the Hollywood Media Awards in Los Angeles.

Now however, he’s keen to work with BoomChang Records to produce the updated versions of the Erogenous Zone’s songs and find a new lead female vocalist who captures the essence of the punk movement but who also has an up to date sound and style.

“It’s great to get back to grassroots level with this project,” said Trevor. “It’s a chance to see what the band would have sounded like with the benefit of 21st century technology and a lot of years of experience. I can’t believe the TV appearance has re-emerged.”

The TV appearance in question was from a Tyne Tees special edition of the popular Check it Out show with Lynne Spencer and Top of the Pops producer, Chris Cowie in 1980. A video of the band performing a song called Modern Woman was shot on the site of the Nissan car factory and featured prominently in the show.

“This is an exciting project and it will be tough finding the right singer for the job. She needs to be gutsy yet melodic and have the right degree of edge and attitude to do the songs justice,” said Steve. “Once we find her we can cut a demo and see what happens from there.”

The Erogenous Zones demo will be recorded at the BoomChang studios in the west end of Newcastle and the band will share the label with the fast-picking’, rootsy, twin-guitar finesse of Diesel Therapy, the acoustic harmonies of The Sand Boys, the melodic Lee McDade and accomplished singer-songwriter from Benwell, Simma.
