Oh Boy! Sherry Holly Plays in Town

Aug 27, 2024

Rock n Roll history will come alive next month when a unique series of concerts takes place featuring the niece of music icon and legend Buddy Holly.

Jamie Bell, the charismatic frontman of Newcastle based The Baldy Holly Band, has organised a special series of three concerts featuring Buddy Holly’s niece Sherry Holly.

Over the years, Jamie has established firm connections with Buddy Holly’s family, including Sherry who is the daughter of Buddy’s brother Larry. Their friendship has grown, and annually, the Baldy Holly Band regularly tour in the USA playing iconic venues. They have  also taken part in the Winter Dance Party tour celebrations in Clear Lake where Buddy played his final show in 1959 at the Surf Ballroom. Hours later, came the tragic plane crash – the day the music died.

The three concerts on 6th, 7th and 8th of September will take place in Forest Hall Conservative Club and will coincide with Buddy Holly’s birthday who would have been 88 on 7th September.

Another rock n roll landmark is also being celebrated as Sherry is getting a behind the scenes tour of Newcastle City Hall where on March 6th, 1958, Buddy Holly and the Crickets headlined their only visit to Newcastle. Also on the bill was Gary Miller, The Tanner Sisters, Ronnie Keene and his Orchestra and a certain up and coming entertainer – Des O’Connor.

“I thought it would be very poignant for Sherry to visit the City Hall and to see where her uncle performed, “said Jamie. “It’s a fantastic venue and I’m sure she will appreciate the visit. Sherry is a great performer in her own right and the band are looking forward to backing her at the three Forest Hall concerts.”

Tickets are available by calling 0191 2661591 or from the venue.
