Phil Gets His Claws into Tiger Energy and Drives Accountability into the Business Energy Sector

Oct 23, 2024

Phil Young, a lawyer from Sunderland, is bringing a fresh wave of transparency and integrity to the business energy sales industry. After a distinguished legal career spanning two decades, Young is now focused on creating a more accountable and honest approach to business energy consultancy through his new venture, Tiger Energy Consultants.

Young’s journey started with a solid legal foundation in Newcastle, where he trained as a commercial lawyer. After spending seven years at a leading law firm, he moved on to a national transport company, where as Head of Legal he played a pivotal role in major transport projects across Europe. During his time there, he led several groundbreaking initiatives, including the acquisition of a well-known train operator and spearheading international projects like the privatisation of transport in Spain and Sweden, as well as implementing a fleet of 400 BMW electric vehicles for a car hire scheme in Copenhagen.

After more than eight years in the transport sector, Young realised his heart remained in the North East. “I was traveling too much and wanted to come back home,” he said. He has since worked with a variety of businesses, including energy firms in the North East, where he spent three to four years gaining insight into the energy sector as Legal Director for a local energy broker.

This experience inspired him to launch Tiger Energy Consultants. The name “Tiger” represents his fierce dedication to securing the best deals for clients. “I wanted something memorable that conveyed our commitment to fighting for our customers,” said Young.

At Tiger Energy, the focus is on SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), providing tailored solutions based on each business’s energy consumption patterns. By meticulously reviewing tariffs and suppliers, Tiger Energy ensures clients receive the most cost-effective energy deals. Young highlighted a recent success story where his team helped a local pizza restaurant in Washington cut its annual electricity costs from £15,800 to just £7,200—without any changes in energy consumption.

Tiger Energy’s clients span a wide range, from ethical superstores in Glastonbury to a national laundrette chain and even a major bus operator. Young is particularly passionate about helping startups, having provided guidance to emerging businesses through Sunderland’s Business Innovation Centre. “It’s a joy to help businesses at their critical early stages, forming long-term partnerships that grow as they do,” he added.

In an era of economic uncertainty, Young believes businesses can no longer afford to overlook their energy costs. “The variation in tariffs and prices is huge,” he warned. Tiger Energy’s no-cost, no-obligation review service helps companies navigate this complex landscape, ensuring they are not locked into unfavourable contracts.

One such business is Harrison & Brown Furniture located in the heart of Sunderland. MD Mandy Brown said:

“Tiger Energy Consultants were able to save us 24% on our electricity bills as well as more than 5% on our gas bills – saving us thousands each year.

It’s comforting to know that they are there throughout the duration of supply agreements with advice and updates on the energy so that we can plan our business finances with confidence.”

Reputation is everything in the energy sector and Young is making sure that Tiger Energy Consultants leads the way with pride.

“I believe that my experiences working within law, coupled with my energy experience

and having a tiger to look after you will give you the strength and agility to tackle challenges head-on. In the wild energy landscape, a tiger’s instincts can help you spot threats early and pounce on opportunities swiftly, ensuring businesses stay ahead of the competition.”
