Mar 12, 2025

To mark World Down Syndrome Day, Durham based photographer Debbie Todd has unveiled a stunning gallery of photographs that highlight the beauty, joy, and positive qualities of young people with Down Syndrome.

The exhibition, at the Metrocentre Community Hub, aims to challenge misconceptions and celebrate the individuality, strength, and vibrant personalities of people with Down syndrome. Through her lens, Debbie captures heartfelt and uplifting moments, showing the world that Down syndrome is not a limitation but a source of unique qualities and achievements.

Debbie, who has long been passionate about inclusive storytelling through photography, hopes the exhibition will spark important conversations and promote greater acceptance and understanding.

“Every person in this gallery has a story to tell, and their energy, kindness, and resilience shine through in every image,” said Debbie. “This exhibition is about shifting perceptions and celebrating the positivity that individuals with Down Syndrome bring to our communities.”

Among the featured models is Ava, whose mother, Eleanor Baggaley from Ryton, shared her thoughts on the exhibition:

“Seeing Ava’s portrait in this gallery fills me with pride. Debbie has captured her personality so beautifully—her kindness, her laughter, and her determination. This exhibition is a wonderful way to showcase the joy and uniqueness of individuals with Down syndrome, and I hope it helps more people appreciate the incredible contributions they make to society.”
