Photographers develop radio skills in Northumberland

Nov 12, 2014

A Northumberland based online community radio station is exposing two new presenters to the airwaves as they develop a new show.

New recruits to Radio Northumberland are professional photographers Shauni Wilson and Aimee Lindsay, known by their business name Layne & Lindsay. The name came from Shauni’s middle name being ‘Layne’ and Aimee’s surname being ‘Lindsay’.

The pair met in 2011 when they started their degree in Commercial Photography. They graduated together and less than a year later they decided to open their own photography studio in North Shields and work together as a photography duo specialising in commercial photography, including PR, Fashion, Industrial and Food.

Now they have joined the radio station to not only provide quality marketing photography but also to present their own show that mixes “happy” songs with their love of photography.

“The show is quite unique in so much that we help people to understand how cameras work and how to take the best possible photographs with the cameras they have,” said Aimee. “We run photography workshops and quite literally we have transferred some of the key points to radio.”

Radio Northumberland based in Manor Walks Shopping Centre Cramlington has been providing 24 hour local radio since it launched in January 2012. It has gained a reputation for community involvement as well as broadcasting music and talk based programming including coverage of Blyth Spartans which has a worldwide following. Everything at the station is done on a voluntary basis with equipment currently being purchased after fundraising or donations or via sponsorship.

Station Manager, Stewart Allen from Bedlington, who as a veteran of more than 30 years in local radio brings a wealth of knowledge with him, was delighted to welcome the girls and is also looking for other volunteers to strengthen the station’s back room staff.

“A successful radio station isn’t just about good presenters and programme schedules,” he said. “We are always looking for people to volunteer with specific skills such as accountancy, admin, telephone answering, office skills and facilities management.”

Anyone interested in helping us out or sponsorship can contact us by email requests@radionorthumberland.com or via our Twitter feed @rnorthumberland.

The station broadcasts a variety of music styles and genres with shows by experienced presenters and interviewers as well as shows produced and presented by local schools and other community organisations.
