With the unexpected onset of Sepsis, I’ve been putting my feet up more than usual and I’ve been spending the hours watching TV. However, something I watched has sparked a creative idea that I hope will help your business look at the way that you meet your PR needs.
I’m a great fan of Alex Polizzi, The Hotel Inspector, a no nonsense hotelier who goes into troubled establishments, does her magic and helps hotels get back onto their feet.
This made me think about what I do in the PR world and how I can help others to get the best possible value for their PR budget.
I hear many stories from business owners who are tied into contracts with a PR firm and are paying unbelievable amounts of money each month for a less than standard service. I’ve heard about the businesses paying almost £3,000 per month for three days work (minimum of four months contract) and others being told that they are getting free full page spreads in glossy, quality magazines for free. They’re not. They are paying huge monthly retainers and the PR company is simply spending their customers’ hard earned cash on publications and then claiming they’ve done a lot of hard work negotiating to feature them in that magazine. There is a place for advertising placements but not at such a high cost to the client.
Social media management is another way that some people make money for doing very little. It’s not uncommon to spend many hundreds of pounds per month managing a Facebook or Twitter account when a fraction of that amount can do just as good a job if the right posts are composed and posted at the right times.
I could go on about web copy, media training, the cost of pro photography or one off press releases but I won’t. I will however, offer to talk to you on a no obligation basis about your current PR commitments and what Highlights PR can do for you. If we can’t help that’s fine, it’s another contact made and that’s what makes the business world go around.
