Punks Show They Have Hearts Too

Apr 8, 2023

A Cramlington social club may not be the first place that springs to mind hosting a punk rock gig, but two music promoters are literally putting their heart and soul into it for charity.

Alison Stanley and Maggie Martin share a love of punk music and have arranged the “God Save the King” event at Cramlington Village Club on 22nd July. The line-up includes Cramlington band Operation Vanguard, South Shields based The Zoinks, punk covers band The V’s and headlining are rising stars Hung Like Hanratty from the Mansfield area.

Hung Like Hanratty write songs about everyday life and the things that annoy everyday people such as traffic wardens, dog fouling and inconsiderate drivers. They have recently headlined the Great British Alternative Festival at Butlins Skegness drawing in more than 4000 appreciative fans.

While the music lovers will benefit from an evening of punk tunes, the real winners will be North East Hearts with Goals who will receive some fundraising money from the night.

The charity is based in Cramlington and is run by Christine Stephenson and Kelly Best. They place lifesaving defibrillators into public places such as schools, colleges, and sports clubs. The charity has placed over 500 defibrillators around the North East and arranged training to use them. To date, their placed defibrillators have saved at least 30 people. Money raised on the night will go towards a defibrillator for Cramlington.

“You can’t have too many defibrillators,” said Alison. “Maggie and I have seen the lifesaving work that the charity does and wanted to help. If defibrillation occurs within five minutes of cardiac arrest, the person has a survival chance of 50-70% and that can be the difference between life and death.”

Christine Stephenson from the charity was delighted with the fundraising idea by Maggie and Alison.

“We are always happy to accept donations from events such as The Great North Run and personal sponsorship, but I don’t think we’ve ever done a punk rock concert before. We hope everyone has a great night and thank everyone in advance for buying raffle tickets and supporting not only the bands but the charity too.”

Tickets £10 from Eventbrite or from Cramlington Village Club.
