Women across the North East are being asked to fall in and join the Military Wives Choir for the chance to make new friends, connect with their local community and learn new skills in a fun and supportive environment.
The Military Wives Choirs Charity was founded in September 2012 by a group of military wives following the enormous success of the No.1 single Wherever You Are. The aim was to ensure a lasting legacy of choirs to enable women in the military community to share the enjoyment and pride that comes from singing together.
Now, the Newcastle Military Wives Choir are recruiting. Based at Albemarle Barracks near Ouston to the west of Newcastle, the choir is one of over 70 Military Wives Choirs in the UK and wherever our forces are based throughout the world.
Lynn Crawford who leads the choir explains that the women who join get far more out of being a member than just the chance to sing.
“Families of service personnel move around frequently and it can be tough to put down roots, make new friends and get to know people in the local community. Add to that the stresses and strains of our loved ones being deployed away from home often for long periods, life can have its challenges. But by coming together to sing, we create a valuable support network for women in the military community. We all help one another through the tough times, celebrate the good times and sing through it all together.”
As well as being open to wives of serving personnel either, anyone with a military connection can join including those currently serving, veterans, mothers, sisters and daughters. Rehearsals are held every Wednesday evening with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and no experience or auditions are necessary.
The Newcastle Military Wives Choir will be showcasing their work at a special charity show on 23rd September at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House Newcastle. Amongst others also on the bill are award winning vocalist Junior Turner, The Baldy Holly Band and comedians Jason Cook and Steffen Peddie,
Organiser James Horner said
“Everyone taking part both onstage and behind the scenes, including the bar staff have given up their time for free to help the cause. We’re raising funds for SSAFA and the Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust.
“The show is more than three hours long and fun for all of the family. The show will also be celebrating 100 years from the end of the Great War and the formation of the R.A.F too. We are therefore delighted that the Military Wives Choir will be performing for us.”
