A Northumbrian recruitment specialist is making waves by swimming a mile to raise awareness and much needed funds for ovarian cancer.
Sara Eke from North Northumberland has always had a passion for the sea, sailing and fishing and when her long time friend Jane Carr from Tynemouth was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she was determined to help in the best way she could.
“Being a keen sailor based in Amble, I often pass Coquet Island on my way out to sea and it’s one of my favourite places to view wildlife and enjoy the views of the coastline. Jane is one of my favourite people and so I had the idea of virtually linking the two together to swim the distance between Amble and Coquet Island to raise funds for ovarian cancer charity, The Eve Appeal,” said Sara.
Sadly, due to landing restrictions on the Island, Sara is unable to physically swim the one mile distance in the North Sea so instead she has kindly been offered a private swimming session at Village Farm Health Club in Shillbottle where she will swim 150 lengths of the pool on October 3rd.
Sara’s swim will help raise awareness for the often symptomless ovarian cancer, the sixth most common cancer in women with 7,300 people being diagnosed in the UK each year. Sara is being sponsored by her family, friends and business associates and so far, she has raised a staggerring total of £750.
Sara has been regularly training for many weeks and is confident that she’s up to the task. Jane is very impressed with her friend’s dedication and support and will attend the swim to cheer her on. “I really admire Sara’s determination to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer. I’m just glad she’s doing it in the pool and not the North Sea but knowing Sara, that might be her next challenge.”
When she’s not swimming, her business, Sara Eke Recruitment specialises in handling vacancies for permanent and interim positions all over the UK with many of her customers being located in her native Northumberland.
