Save Druridge launch photo competition

May 27, 2015

Campaigners from the Save Druridge group who are fighting proposals to bring open cast mining to the area are hoping for more exposure for their cause as they launch a photographic competition.

Amateur photographers are being urged to send in photos that showcase the coastal area of Druridge Bay and the surrounding area that could be lost if open cast mining gets the green light.

One of the organisers, Ali Liddle from Widdrington Station is encouraging budding snappers to send in images that highlight the diversity of the natural environment, show people enjoying the beach and ‘Beach Life’ activities such as dog walking, horse riding, surfing, picnics etc. Seascapes, landscapes, plants, agriculture and buildings could also feature.

“This is a great opportunity for local people to show how much Druridge means to them and it’s also a fantastic way to highlight just how beautiful the surrounding area is here too,” said Ali.

The photos must be taken in the area between Druridge Pools and Cresswell Village along the coast and inland as far as Widdrington Village and the A1068 Coast Road. It covers virtually all of the area that will be lost to open cast if Banks Mining gets approval for the Highthorn site.

There are 3 age categories: Under 11, 12 to 18 and over 18.

Each person may enter 3 photographs.

Photos must be submitted to: sdphotocomp@btinternet.com

Photo captions should accompany all submissions, and should include the subject of the image, the location the image was taken, and the name and age of the photographer. In the case of children’s entries in the Under 11 and 12 to 18 categories a parent or guardians name must also be included.

Entrants should also include a quote explaining what they love about Druridge, what it means to them and why they want to save the area from Open Cast Mining.

The winning photos will be shown at an exhibition in the area later in the year.

Full rules are available on the Save Druridge website
