Wallsend Sea Cadets Launch Urgent Appeal to Save Headquarters from Roof Crisis

Volunteer leaders fear much-loved youth facility could face closure without major repairs

A North Tyneside youth organisation that has helped generations of young people develop confidence, skills and friendships is facing a major challenge after discovering serious problems with the roofs of its headquarters.

Wallsend Sea Cadets has launched an urgent fundraising appeal after inspections revealed that several flat roofs on its building are in a state of disrepair and require extensive replacement work.

The charity estimates the repairs could cost in excess of £50,000 – a daunting sum for the volunteer-run organisation.

Chairman Craig Warkman said the problem came as a devastating blow, particularly as the roofs were only replaced around six years ago.

“We were carrying out inspections of the building and discovered that the flat roofs appear to be failing and will need to be replaced,” he said.

“The work was undertaken around six years ago, but unfortunately the company responsible is no longer trading, which means we have been left to pick up the pieces ourselves.”

Wallsend Sea Cadets provides a safe and welcoming environment where young people can learn practical skills, take part in adventurous activities and gain qualifications while developing teamwork, leadership and self-confidence.

However, Mr Warkman warned that the future of the facility could be at risk if the repairs cannot be completed.

“If the roofs continue to deteriorate and water ingress starts affecting the building, there could come a point where it would no longer be safe for young people to use the premises,” he said.

“We sincerely hope it never comes to that, but there is a possibility that we could be forced to close the facility if the necessary repairs aren’t carried out.”

The unit has launched a GoFundMe campaign and is appealing to local residents, businesses and community organisations for support.

“Any donation, no matter how small, will help,” said Mr Warkman. “Even if people can’t contribute financially, simply sharing our appeal on social media would make a huge difference.

“We would also love to hear from any roofing companies or businesses that may be able to help us with materials, expertise or sponsorship. This facility serves the local community, and we’d be incredibly grateful for any support.”

The appeal comes as the Sea Cadets movement continues to provide valuable opportunities for young people, helping them gain life skills, build resilience and broaden their horizons through activities on land and water.

Anyone wishing to support the fundraising campaign or help is encouraged to contact Wallsend Sea Cadets through its social media channels.
