A talented 21-year-old from Ashington who became an internationally renowned skater has started his own company to help people starting out in the entertainment sector.
Adam Miller grew up with performance in his blood and first trod the boards at a school production at Newcastle City Hall at the age of 10. As well as his passion for acting and dance, it was skating that took over his life at the age of 12.
“My childhood dream was to work for Disney on Ice and I set out to realise my ambition by taking lessons at Whitley Bay Ice Rink.”
Despite being diagnosed with Dyscalculia, a form of numeric dyslexia which makes it difficult to keep track of numbers or perform simple calculations, Adam learned to adapt to instructions involving counting including essential timings for dance steps and turns.
“I had to adapt by making patterns in my head rather than counting and simple things like telling the time was a problem. However, I always had the adage that if you want to make a dream come true you will find a way to do it.”
Adam represented Whitley Bay Ice Rink in a national competition and his skills were identified by Dancing on Ice coach Mark Hanretty who trained him in Sheffield. This was the start of three years of coaching by top Olympic coaches and high-profile chorographers who worked on Dancing on Ice, The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing.
In 2018, Adam got his big break when after a successful audition he joined the Disney on Ice team touring Europe, Brazil and even a home appearance at Newcastle Arena. He became best friends with a host of familiar Disney characters including Goofy, Beast and Maui.
“I couldn’t believe that I, a lad from Northumberland was standing in front of thousands of people performing with one of the most iconic companies in the world, I realised I had achieved my dream.”
He was awoken sharply from his dream however when COVID-19 cancelled all Disney shows and his career was put on hold.
Now, Adam has set up his own entertainment consultancy to help guide and support people going into the professional entertainment sector. The result is the Golden Camera Company with Adam using his experiences to help take the stress out of the unknown for people new to the industry and the pitfalls of life on the road.
“I’m passing on skills such as media training, corporate skills, audition etiquette as well as portfolio creation, video making and social skills. I’m leaving the technical skills to performance coaches as they have very specialist knowledge.”
And it’s not all about positive aspects and the glamour.
“I help people deal with rejection and teach them about the benefits of failure. I’m relatively young but I’ve had the best training and if my experiences help someone on their way to stardom I’ll be very happy.”
