Smiles galore as charity shares birthday

Jan 6, 2013

A North-East charity has celebrated it’s fifth birthday in style by doing what it does best – helping the region’s children to enjoy life to the full.
Smile for Life based in Gosforth teamed up with their nearby Sainsbury’s store who are celebrating five years on Gosforth High Street to host a birthday party with special guests of honour; year 5 pupils from Percy Hedley School in Forest Hall. The store has chosen Smile for Life as their designated charity and has pledged to help them raise much-needed funds to continue their work with the region’s children. Already they have raised more than £2000 for the charity.
Smile for Life provides support to help improve the lives of seriously ill, disabled and disadvantaged children In the North East and up to the Scottish Borders. In the last 12 months, they have helped make the lives of more than more than 100 children easier by supplying equipment, activities and experiences to help them achieve their dreams.

Last summer, pupils at Percy Hedley were treated to a week of dance, drama and drumming when Smile for Life funded a summer school which included theme days, swimming and sports sessions, arts and crafts and ICT activities. Also on the agenda were African drumming and Zumba dancing.
Sainsbury’s charity coordinator Irene Bell was delighted that the joint 5th birthday was shared with the pupils from Percy Hedley.

“ It was great having the children come along to the store to help us celebrate. We had the most marvellous cakes and every child took home a goody bag too,” she said. “ Working with Smile for Life has been a wonderful experience for our team here at Sainsbury’s too. It has made us appreciate the good work they are doing to make the lives of children in our region a little happier.

Paula Gascoigne, Chief Executive of Smile for Life was grateful for the support from Sainsbury’s.
“We couldn’t continue our work without support from people like Irene and the team, it’s fantastic when local businesses pledge their support. I can’t thank them enough.”
