Upstart Turns Up to Turn the Racket Down
Community radio station, Radio Northumberland and TyneIdols are teaming up for the tour which will include songs and north east locations examining the teenage rebels of our youth. From teddy boys to mods and punk to Sam Fender, the tour promises to bring back memories and the odd smile too.
Although the route is a closely guarded secret, the bus will be on the road in North and South Tyneside for three hours and will stop for refreshments too. Special guest is Angelic Upstarts guitarist Mond Cowie who will give an insight into life with one of the most influential punk bands of the era.
Passengers will embark the iconic 1980’s yellow double decker bus at 3pm from The Transport Hub in North Shields and return there at approximately 6.15pm. The bus has a state-of-the-art sound system and will play a selection of classic songs that relate to the stories being told.
Organised by Radio Northumberland’s New Wave With Newman team, the tour will entertain and surprise passengers with tales of the songs and stars all with a north east connection. Keith Newman presenter of the show said: “We’ve found out some amazing facts about music in the area including the site of a shop where a world-famous band popped in for their groceries, a unique designer from Shiremoor, punk and mayhem in South Shields and even Sam Fender has a number of mentions too.”
“Although it has a serious side to it, the tour is very much tongue in cheek and will appeal to anyone who wants a good day out and enjoys listening to a wide range of musical tastes.” said Keith.
