Stake and quips:  Dracula goes “panto” as popular “comedy of terrors” comes back to the North East

Never has “He’s behind you” had such a blood-curdling meaning.

A North East theatre company’s popular “panto-style” re-imagining of the classic horror story Dracula is touring the North East for the third time.

Dracula… The Travesty!starts a 10-day run at venues across the North culminating in a performance at North Shields’ Exchange Theatre on May 31.

The Northumberland Theatre Company (NTC) production arrives in the region fresh from a brief spell ‘slaying’ audience in Scotland.

Devised and created by West End actor playwright Stewart Howson, Dracula… The Travesty!is based on the famous novel by Bram Stoker and is full of wolves, bats and the Brides of Dracula with plenty of audience participation, humour and music.

Although a bit of a romp, the production remains true to its hackles-up hair-raising roots and is suitable for audiences aged 11 and over.

“Audiences love it, which is why the Count is coming out of its coffin for a third tour. It’s light, funny and daft but with strong storytelling and some genuinely scary moments. This is Gothic storytelling at its best: imaginative, atmospheric and physically exciting,” said director Gillian Hambleton.” Whoever said that “fangs ain’t wot they used to be, “hasn’t seen this production yet and I promise they will have a frightfully good time.”

NTC is an acclaimed professional small-scale touring theatre company based at the Dovecote Centre, Amble. Praised in The Guardian for their ability to “match anything done by much bigger, purpose-built theatres”, the company specialises in touring professionally staged theatre shows around the country, predominantly using village halls and community centres as venues in small rural towns and villages.

Dracula: The Travesty will be appearing at small venues, halls and arts centres in Tyneside, Northumberland, County Durham and North Yorkshire.
