Lovers of love songs will love a new production coming to the Dovecote Centre in Amble on 12 October.
Love Songstells the story of two singers on a 60s tribute tour, beginning to fall in love but having to deal with the demons of their past before they can build a future. The play deals with themes of mental health and domestic abuse but also features quirky characters that are unable to separate themselves from the icons they portray, with often comical consequences.
The playfeatures an array of classic songs, such as Bridge Over Troubled Water, Somewhere, True Love Ways, Love Me Tender & Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.
The new play was written by celebrated North East writer, Tom Kelly, well-known throughout the regionfor his plays and musicals. His work includesThe Dolly Mixturesand Geordie The Musical, and his one-man play, I Left My Heart in Roker Park. His latest success,Bobby Robson Saved My Lifehas just toured the country to great acclaim.
Tom created the play especially for his next-door neighbours Jonathan and Helen cash who are both singers and actors.
Tom Kelly said, “I wanted to write something to capitalise on the talents of Helen and Jonathan and, as they are both singers as well as actors, it seemed a shame not to use that. Also, I love these songs and tribute tours are the bread and butter of many of our local theatres nowadays. It seemed very current to use that as a background to address subjects like mental health and the impact of domestic abuse in a believable and ultimately positive way. I believe audiences will respond to that.”
Artistic Director Gillian Hambleton from Northumberland Theatre Company is looking forward to the production coming to Amble.
“The Dovecote centre is a very intimate performance space and ideal for these love songs to create the right atmosphere for the perfect night out at the theatre.”
