One of the most influential music scenes of the 1970’s will be celebrated this coming Bank Holiday as Radio Northumberland and TyneIdols team up for a special punk tour of Tyneside.
TyneIdols take music fans on a magical mystery tour of the region’s musical and film heritage in their iconic 1980’s yellow double decker bus; co-owned by Paul Irwin (ex Tygers of Pan Tang) and former Lindisfarne drummer Ray Laidlaw. However for the next tour, they will be swapping The Animals for Anarchy and Dire Straits for The Damned as they hand over the bus to punk radio presenter Keith Newman who will host the punk themed event.
“I’ve been planning this for some time and now as the punk movement celebrates its 40th anniversary, we’ll be taking the bus to a few old established punk venues and reminiscing on the glory days of the scene in Newcastle. We’ll also have on-board one or two special guests who were very influential in the punk scene both back then and indeed now,” said Keith.
The TyneIdols Atlantean, yellow double decker bus will be picking fans up at Bewick Street Newcastle (opposite Central Station) at 7pm on Bank Holiday Monday and will travel around the city and Gateshead with Keith and his team from the popular Radio Northumberland show, New Wave With Newman, Punky Paul and Ramona Lisa pointing out facts relating to the punk scene. Passengers can expect to hear trivia such as the place where a famous punk guitarist had his hair cut and the site of a punk venue now long gone where The Clash famously busked to an amazed audience. Couple this with a visit to two music hostelries and interviews with punk stars, it looks set to be a great way to celebrate the movements birthday.
The bus has a state of the art sound system and will play a selection of classic punk and new wave songs that relate to the stories being told.
Admission is by ticket only – Tickets £5pp from Julie Clay on 0191 253 1618. www.tyneidols.com/events
