Community radio station launches show to connect the isolated
Volunteers from community radio station, Radio Northumberland are launching a new show to provide vital information and connect families during the COVID-19 crisis.
The station, based in Bedlington is producing a show called “Northumberland Together” which features music and information relating to the Coronavirus pandemic including interviews with councillors and people making a difference to the community. The show is presented by station manager Stewart Allen.
One important feature of the show is the chance for residents of care homes and other people who are feeling isolated during this period to record a message to their loved ones together with a request for a song that means a lot to them. The family can then send back recorded messages via the airwaves. So far, the idea is being piloted with residents at Meadow Park Care Home in Bedlington and individuals living alone at this time.
Lyn Horton from Bedlington charity, Leading Link is supporting community groups such as the Bedlington Network team to coordinate participants for the show and then also linking back to the Northumberland County Council, Communities Together initiative.
“All credit to Radio Northumberland for changing its schedules to help the community in this time of need. Now more than ever, people need to feel connected and being able to hear your loved ones via the station will bring a great deal of joy and comfort to many.”
The show airs on Radio Northumberland Monday to Friday at 10am, 6pm and Midnight and at weekends at 9am, 6pm and Midnight.
