A North East actor has been given a career lift by being chosen for a unique programme of support from BAFTA.
Micky McGregor from Wallsend is one of just 21 talented actors nationally who have been selected for BAFTA Elevate 2019. Each of the chosen actors represent a range of abilities, genders, races, sexual orientations or socioeconomic backgrounds. The course is designed to help people from underrepresented groups to progress in their acting careers and to tackle the issues associated with diversity in the TV and film industry.
Micky, with partner Harriet Ghost, runs Newcastle based Blowin’ a Hooley Theatre which was set up to improve access to theatre in deprived communities. He has recently performed in Tom Hadaway’s play The Filleting Machine and played a series regular on the BAFTA award winning CBBC show Wolfblood. He also played a part in the Ken Loach movie I, Daniel Blake and in November he will be seen in Loach’s new movie Sorry We Missed You.
Micky is looking forward to the programme which will include networking opportunities, introductions, mentoring, tailored panel discussions, masterclasses and workshops focused on professional development.
“In this business, it can be difficult to get the right connections if your background is like mine – a proud regional working class one. I didn’t have the best start in life and I was homeless at the age of 16. Hard work and a determined attitude turned things around for me and this programme of support from BAFTA is a real step up for me. I’m delighted and looking forward to the exciting opportunities ahead,” he said.
