Healthwatch award for “excellent care” ward
A Newcastle cancer patient has nominated the hospital ward where he was treated for a special Healthwatch Newcastle award.
John Lowden (73) from Benwell still runs his own stationery business and the brave Septogenarian has undertaken a multitude of treatments to help fight the disease since it was diagnosed in April this year.
John was treated in Ward 46 of Newcastle’s RVI, a general surgical ward which mainly provides care for people requiring treatment for a range of surgical procedures focusing on bowel disorders.
“I’ve a great deal of admiration and respect for the work that this ward does for everyone in their care,” said John. “Everyone smiles and has time for you even if it’s for something trivial. Everyone from the surgeons to the nurses and the cleaning staff deserve to be recognised and when I heard about the Healthwatch Newcastle Star awards I knew I had to nominate them.”
Sister Hayley Robinson was pleased to receive the award on behalf of her team.
“I’m delighted and very proud that John has thought so much of the way that we looked after him when he stayed with us that he nominated us for this prestigious award. It’s great that Healthwatch Newcastle has identified us as one of their Stars. We are all pleased to be recognised for what we do as part of our everyday work.”
Steph Edusei, Chief Executive of Healthwatch Newcastle said:
“We often hear really good comments about the care that patients in Newcastle receive from the NHS. The star awards are a way of feeding those good positive comments back to the people who are on the front line of care in our hospitals, doctors surgeries and other caring services within the city.
“John has given some excellent feedback about his care and we were only too pleased to celebrate that with Sister Robinson and her team.”
If you know a person or a service within Newcastle you think deserves to be recognised, let Healthwatch Newcastle know why by completing the ‘Nominate a Star’ online form at www.healthwatchnewcastle.org.uk
