Lord Mayor Praises Volunteers at The People’s Kitchen as Civic Year Ends (Steve Brock)

The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Henry Gallagher, has thanked volunteers at The People’s Kitchen as he comes to the end of his term of office.

Founded in 1985, The People’s Kitchen is one of the Lord Mayor’s chosen charities. The charity provides free hot meals, friendship and practical support to vulnerable people across Newcastle. Run entirely by volunteers, it serves around 300 meals every day of the year and offers a vital sense of community to those most in need.

The charity relies on donations from members of the public, businesses and community organisations to continue its work.

As part of his civic role, Councillor Gallagher helped raise funds and awareness for the charity through a range of civic events and community activities during his year in office.

Speaking about the charity, the Lord Mayor said:

“It’s been fantastic being able to help The People’s Kitchen. I first came here when I was Deputy Lord Mayor, and I was really impressed by how caring and dedicated the volunteers are. I decided then that this needed to be one of my chosen charities because the volunteers do such an excellent job.

“I’ve seen how caring they are and have been privileged to see the work they do at first hand.”

Maggie Pavlou, Trustee at The People’s Kitchen, welcomed the Lord Mayor’s support. She said:

“We’ve been honoured to have the Lord Mayor championing our work this year. His involvement reminds the city that kindness costs nothing but changes lives.

“Every day, our volunteers provide hot meals, friendship and hope to those who need it most, and having the Lord Mayor’s encouragement means the world to us.”

During his year in office, the Lord Mayor also supported Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care, which provides free transport and companionship for cancer patients travelling to hospital for treatment.
