Pupils at a North Tyneside school had a history lesson with a difference when 1966 World Cup winner, Jack Charlton popped in with his football shirt, winners’ medal and other soccer memorabilia.
The youngsters from Whitley Lodge First School in Whitley Bay were treated to the visit after student Charlie Irwin (6) told his dad that they were learning all about the 1966 World Cup at school.
Dad Paul, who runs EastCoast Taxis and Newcastle based pop and rock tourism company, TyneIdols, (with ex Lindisfarne drummer, Ray Laidlaw) had already bought a quantity of World Cup replicas trophies to use as prizes for the taxi firm’s customers and decided to put them to good use.
“ I saw how interested Charlie was being able to touch and feel the replica trophies and thought it would be nice for the other children in his class to learn through experience too, said Paul. “When Jack Charlton heard about the idea to show the children the replica trophies he volunteered to bring the shirt he wore in the World Cup Final and his winner’s medal to the school which really brought the memories of 1966 to life again”
Jack was born into a footballing family in Ashington; his uncle was Jackie Milburn and his brother Bobby went on to play for England and Manchester United. Jack played for Leeds United and England and later managed his childhood dream team; Newcastle United before achieving cult status as manager of the Republic of Ireland team.
“It’s great that our historic win is being celebrated in the school especially during the current World Cup campaign,” said Jack. “I was delighted to help them to understand how important the competition was to not only myself, but to the whole of the country too.”
Head teacher Fiona Lutman said, “This is bringing history alive. It’s almost 50 years since England last won the World Cup and Jack has helped the children to relive that momentous day back in 1966. It’s generated a lot of interest for the children and has given us more material to base our studies on “
Jack and Paul also visited Southlands Special School in Tynemouth too.
At each of the schools a replica World Cup trophy was donated by EastCoast Taxis and will be awarded each year for high achievement in the schools.
