A north east comedian who once spent a night fine dining at Sharon Stone’s luxury Beverley Hills mansion is looking forward to tucking into a “Brickies Banquet” when fans of one of the region’s best loved TV exports come to Newcastle.
Jesmond stand up comic and comedy promoter David McBeth (48) will be compering a unique celebration of the iconic TV show, Auf Wiedersehen Pet on 21st September at a star-studded event at the Hilton Hotel Newcastle Gateshead.
Over four series and a Christmas special, the show followed the exploits and adventures of a group of migrant construction workers around the globe including Germany, Cuba, USA and Spain. The series also spawned the careers and made household names of the lead characters Tim Healy, Kevin Whately, Jimmy Nail, Gary Holton, Christopher Fairbank, Pat Roach and Timothy Spall.
“This will be a tremendous event for fans of the show old and new,” said David.
“Fans will be able to dine with members of the cast, the writers and producers. The evening will have a ‘construction theme’ and will feature a potted ‘history of the series’ with live and filmed anecdotes from the cast and famous fans of the show.”
Amongst those present on the night will be the show’s writers, Dick Clement and Whitley Bay born Ian la Frenais who is a close friend of McBeth.
“My parents were close to Ian and I have fantastic memories of flying out to Los Angeles as a youngster to stay with him and his wife Doris. In recent years, I’ve been introduced to his A list circle of friends including Jeff Lynne from ELO and actress Sharon Stone but Ian regards them all as “just normal people.” There are no airs and graces with Ian and the fans will love him for that.
“Ian is both a role model and a mentor to me and his comedy timing is second to none. I often email him my own comedy scripts and they’ll sometimes come back with amendments that really amaze me and make me laugh out loud.”
David’s relationship with Ian La Frenais is such that when he recently married his wife Amanda (who he met in a comedy club) , the newly weds spent part of their honeymoon in LA as guests of Ian and Doris.
“The Auf Wiedersehen banquet will be a unique experience and I’m looking forward to sharing some stories about my experiences with Ian that I know will make the fans smile on the night.”
David is no stranger to high profile entertainers as his father David McBeth senior presented the famous One O’clock TV show and was regarded as Newcastle’s first pop star in the 1960’s supporting the Beatles on a nationwide tour.
