Gareth Tate, a passionate advocate for environmental conservation, has initiated a fundraising campaign aimed at acquiring the ancient woodland surrounding his community in Stobswood, Northumberland. The ancient woodland, which dates back to before the 1700s, is currently up for sale from a private owner. Gareth’s vision is to secure the woodland for the community, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
The danger posed by private ownership lies in the potential for unsustainable management practices. Despite its designation as an ancient woodland, a significant portion of trees has already been felled albeit with proper permission. Concerns have been aired within the village that if another private buyer were to assume ownership, similar actions might be taken in the future. While acknowledging the need for responsible forest management, the community hopes to avoid a repeat of the extensive tree removal that occurred previously.
This woodland holds immense value to the community. Gareth and his family discovered the woodland while his children were young. Since then, it has become an integral part of their daily lives, with frequent visits for walks and recreational activities. Preserving this woodland would ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy its natural beauty and benefits.
The fundraising goal is £45,000 and Gareth hopes to raise funds through donations from individuals and businesses alike. Every contribution, regardless of its size, will be deeply appreciated as it brings the community closer to securing the woodland for preservation. The funds will be utilised by an elected trust that will assume ownership and oversee the management of the woodland.
To facilitate donations, Gareth Tate has set up a JustGiving account, where individuals can contribute towards the preservation of the ancient woodland in Stobswood.

Gareth expressed his sincere gratitude to everyone who supports the cause. “This is an immensely important part of our community. Everyone who donates is helping to safeguard our cherished natural spaces. Together, we can ensure that this ancient woodland remains a source of inspiration, tranquillity, and biodiversity for generations to come.”
