Healthwatch Soldiers on with Last Eggs

Apr 21, 2022

The last 35 Easter eggs of more than 1700 distributed to good causes throughout the north east has been allocated to Healthwatch Newcastle who in turn have passed them on to another deserving organisation.

The Good Egg Partnership between community radio station Radio Northumberland, Bedlington charity Leading Link and Lodge Temperance from Northumberland Freemasons has donated eggs to good causes from Spennymoor in the south, Hexham in the west, to Alnwick in the north and everywhere in-between.

Mel Bramley, Outreach and Engagement Officer with Healthwatch Newcastle, the independent not-for-profit organisation who gather and represent the views and experiences of users of local health and social care services is the final recipient of eggs from the project.

Karen Goldfinch from Radio Northumberland explained why Healthwatch Newcastle were chosen.

“We know that Mel’s important role is to reach out into the community to engage with people from all backgrounds to ensure that their views on health and social care are heard so that improvements can be made for all. Healthwatch are all good eggs too and with their community connections they can reach people that we can’t.”

Mel has already arranged for the eggs to be distributed by St Vincent’s, a community centre and venue run by the St Vincent de Paul Society for the people of Newcastle. They run the newly refurbished Vinnie’s café, a weekly drop-in free lunch service where local homeless population are fed on a pay-as-you-please basis.

“The centre does great work with their customers and Its really nice to offer these eggs to them – especially as they work with a lot of young refugees and migrants,” said Mel.

The Good Egg Partnership has distributed Easter eggs to special schools, food banks, care homes, veterans’ charities and youth centres and other good causes across Durham, North Tyneside, Newcastle, and Northumberland.

Radio Northumberland has advertised and coordinated the collection of eggs and Leading Link has distributed them to families. Lodge Temperance used their members to coordinate with care homes and schools.

Karen Goldfinch added, “It’s been a cracking Easter with around 1725 eggs distributed to 37 good causes. We’d like to thank the 19 individuals, businesses, lodges, supermarkets and others who have donated cash or eggs to help us put so many smiles on so many people’s faces this Easter. It’s been heart-warming to see people’s generosity and we’re pleased to see that the Good Egg Partnership really has made a cracking difference to people’s lives.”
