A leading complementary health expert has questioned aspects of the treatment given to thousands of North East patients by the established medical profession.
At a time when the NHS is struggling with budgets and doctors are faced with long patient lists and short consultation times, there are a huge number of people suffering from IBS and chronic fatigue that are not getting the quality of help or support they need and expect.
Patients are often left frustrated and even more so because doctors don’t see a link between digestive conditions and what their patient is eating on a daily basis. They are often unaware that the antibiotics which were prescribed for good reasons can go on to cause an imbalance in the gut flora or microbiome of the patient. This causes digestive problems and can lead to chronic fatigue, as can the wrong diet or wrongly diagnosed thyroid problems.
Kinesiologist Katrina Woodrow, who battled with headaches and discomfort for years before finding out she was wheat and dairy intolerant, is aiming to help people with disorders such as IBS and chronic fatigue after a number of her patients complained about the treatment received by their GPs.
Ponteland-based Katrina, who qualified in 2001 is a registered professional with the Kinesiology Federation. Kinesiology uses muscle testing to isolate food allergies and intolerances and then suggests alternatives and supplements that can put the body back into balance.
Katrina herself suffered repeated bouts of earache and sore throats as a child growing up in Lobley Hill. The antibiotics used to treat them left her with a yeast overgrowth in her gut that led to a lot of discomfort. Later, she was forced to give up work as a secretary due to blinding headaches that her doctors told her were stress-related. More than a decade later, she saw a Kinesiologist who diagnosed her food intolerances. Within weeks, the pain and discomfort lifted and she decided to train in kinesiology herself to help others in the same position.
Now, she is seeing a rise in the number of patients coming to her with painful symptoms including those associated with IBS and chronic fatigue after the only help offered by doctors was over the counter treatment including Buscopan and Immodium.
“Recently, I have had a patient who made more progress after seeing me than she had made with her gastroenterologist. The doctor was surprised that she was feeling better than she had been previously. When she told him she had seen a Kinesiologist and had given up gluten and dairy containing foods, he replied by saying that she wasn’t coeliac, as he had tested her.
‘A subsequent check at hospital found that the lady’s condition had improved and a registrar commented that he was pleased she had found someone who could help without needing medication or surgery.
“Sadly, this is another case of people being written off by their doctors and gastroenterologists when they are found not to be coeliac, but who still need help.”
Katrina, who has been practising since 2001, has treated more than 400 people and helped to resolve their problems. In some cases, she has treated three generations of the same family.
