New Head of Unit Offers Support on Merchant Navy Day

Sep 1, 2018

National, nautical charity, the Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) has hoisted the flag to support Merchant Navy Day.

The event on 3rd September is organised by national charity Seafarers UK, to raise public awareness of the Merchant Navy’s massive contribution to the life of the ‘island nation’ of Great Britain. Participants can show their support by flying the Red Ensign over the weekend.

Operating regionally from Berwick to Hartlepool, The MVS Northumbria Unit has another reason to celebrate their links with the Merchant Navy as they have just appointed their new Head of Unit.

Paul Casson from Rowlands Gill is taking over the helm from Angela Carrington who has built up the unit’s good reputation within the maritime community during the last four years.

“I’m delighted that the unit is in such good hands with Paul’s leadership and I look forward to supporting him in the coming months and years,” said Angela.

Paul brings with him many skills including his knowledge of engineering and personal qualifications in power boating and communications. He has previously worked with the Sea Cadets and is also a keen sea kayaker and he occasionally sails.

“It’s appropriate that my appointment has happened at the same time as Merchant Navy Day,” said Paul.  “The MVS proudly flies the Merchant Navy red ensign with our crest on both our vessels. Even though we are a very small part of the UK’s merchant fleet we are all proud of the sacrifices given in two world wars and beyond by the men and women of our Merchant Navy.”

Founded in 1994, the MVS has more than 25 units around the UK coastline at major port and river areas. Its aim is to keep the country’s seafaring traditions alive, with practical training in seamanship, small boat handling, engineering and communications.

In recent months, the Northumbria Unit has assisted the Harbour Master at Sunderland during the Tall Ships Race and they have just taken delivery of a new rigid hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) donated by Northumberland Freemasons. The Northumbria Unit is based in Benton and trains with its 21ft patrol boat at Newcastle’s St Peter’s Marina and the RHIB all over the region. Membership is open to anyone over 18 years of age and the unit recruits from the Tees to the Tweed. No experience is needed as full training is given.
