Protestors from the past donate for future of Druridge Bay

Jun 8, 2015

Two groups of environmental protestors were united after more than 30 years after funds were transferred to help Druridge Bay’s battle against opencast mining.

Around £350 was handed over from the original Druridge Bay Campaign who were set up to help prevent the building of a nuclear power station at Druridge Bay in the 1980’s.

Libby Paxton from Morpeth who was a member of the original group of protestors arranged the handover of funds to the Save Druridge group at a handshake ceremony at the Drift Inn near Cresswell.

Lynne Gargett, secretary of the Save Druridge group was delighted to receive the cheque from Libby.

“This is a significant amount of money and will enable us to produce materials that we can hand out at public events to raise awareness of the close proximately of the open cast to the bay itself. This threat is every bit as important as the anti-nuclear campaign in the 80’s and we appreciate the support given by the original team of protestors.”

Libby Paxton commented,

“The Save Druridge Campaign received support today in the form of a handshake and donation from the original Druridge Bay Campaign which successfully opposed the building of a nuclear power station at Druridge Bay. The remaining members of DBC are pleased to support a new campaign group which is prepared to raise awareness of the latest threats to Druridge Bay caused by open cast mining.”
