It was the decade that fashion forgot – but dust off your lurex loons, the Seventies is back in town night and it’s on leap yer

Intent on re-creating the era they love, the Ultimate 70s Show promises fans an authentic evening of Seventies classic hits delivered just as you would have heard them back in their hey day.

The Ultimate 70s Show is a totally live tribute to the rock and pop idols of the 1970s, featuring the music of Slade, The Sweet, David Bowie, Suzi Quatro, Alice Cooper, Mott the Hoople and Queen to name but a few. It also features the timeless music of Marc Bolan and TRex which bizzarly has a connection with one of Dumfries’ most famous sons.

DJ Calvin Harris is quoted in his biography “The $100m DJ” as watching a vintage TRex performance on the Old Grey Whstle Test and admiring the keyboard players glam rock sunglasses. Unable to find anything similar in the town, he made his own pair using diamante sequins. He took a picture of him wearing them, made it black and white and that then became his logo.

Homemade sunglasses won’t be in evidence on the night as the band wear authentic costumes and the music is as near to the original as possible.

Singer Chris Hill is hoping that as it’s leap year, a few ladies in the audience might take the chance to get up on stage and propose to their boyfriends.

“What would be better than getting down to our great 70’s pop tunes and then getting down on one knee to pop the question? Anyone who wants to plan a surprise can contact us via our website.”

Martin Metcalf, a former guitarist with legendary group Geordie, is one of the seven 70s rockers and session musicians who make up Ultimate 70s, whose brand of entertainment has been a huge hit with festival goers all across the UK and Europe.

As well as Martin on guitar and singer Chris, the band features a drummer, saxophonist, bassist and keyboard player whose credits include playing and supporting a host of legendary musicians including Sting and INXS.

Martin, who goes by his stage name of Metz, said: “This is an amazing night for anyone who loves Seventies music, and fashion. Or anyone who just wants to know more. The brilliant thing about our show is that you don’t need to have been there the first time around to enjoy the Seventies spirit. There has never been a decade like it for the sheer energy and ostentation and fun. There’s no obligation to dress-up. But we’ll be going for it, so why not?

“I got into glam rock in my teens, listening to bands like TRex, Slade and Bowie. The sparkly platform boots and star-patterned jumpers were the icing on the cake.

“Mick Ronson was my first guitar hero, then I got into heavier sounds like Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. They were the catalyst for me wanting to play music.”

Tickets for the show on 29 February at Dumfries Theatre Royal are available from www.theatreroyaldumfries.co.uk/whats-on/ultimate-70s-show
