An award-winning designer, and founder of the popular Jerry J label, is passing on the secrets of his success to three rising entrepreneurs.
Lamin Gibba, who launched the high-end designer streetwear brand just under two years ago with the support of The Newcastle Prince’s Trust Enterprise programme, is mentoring Dominic Baty, an up and coming designer, along with identical twins Juliette and Georgina Lance, who present the Jerry J YouTube channel.
Lamin, who has quickly grown Jerry J Clothing, which is now worn by young people around the UK and even professional footballers, inspired Dominic to set up his own clothing brand, Demonic Clothing based in Sunderland. Dominic has spent the last year developing the product line with the help of Lamin. The pair met at a Princes Trust talk where Lamin was the speaker. Dominic said: “I really admire everything Lamin has done as an entrepreneur since he came to the UK from his native Gambia to better his chances in life. He is a huge inspiration and when he offered to be my mentor I jumped at the chance!
“Being able to talk to him about my business’ highs and lows is simply invaluable. He’s spotted and created opportunities for me, made some fantastic introductions, and has helped me to hone my entrepreneurial sense to keep me on the right track.”
Juliette and Georgina Lance from Alnwick present Lamin’s YouTube channel, broadcasted from the Pride TV Studios in Felling, and the first show featured Newcastle singer Jamilah. Juliette said: “Lamin is a brilliant mentor and his positive energy and attitude is infectious. He is always ready to support me to succeed, while challenging and pushing me to grow; the process has given me a real boost in confidence and belief in my own capabilities.”
Lamin concludes: “The early years are usually the most difficult for most entrepreneurs and can feel exciting yet overwhelming. I feel very privileged that Dominic, Juliette and Georgina value my opinion and I enjoy helping them to set a clear path, move forward and aim high.
“I came from The Gambia with nothing and one of the reasons I am where I am today is because of the support and advice given to me from The Prince’s Trust who gave me the knowledge, skills and confidence to make my fashion brand stand out. Despite being a mentor, I still have one myself. After all, remaining openminded to learning is a lifelong adventure, and the harder you work for something, the greater you will feel when you achieve it.”
