A Brough mum, diagnosed with breast cancer at just 32 has written a book in the hope of inspiring others to cope and conquer the Big C.
Kerry Stott, (36) will be launching her book “Double Decker Bus – one woman’s adventure with cancer,” in Kirkby Stephen’s Church Gallery on 18th of June.
The book tells how Kerry as a student nurse, struggled to cope not only with the disease but also with a limited income and her university studies. Just two weeks after diagnosis, she underwent a mastectomy and full lymph node clearance followed by aggressive chemotherapy and radio therapy. As if that wasn’t enough, Kerry had to deal with the ill effects of her treatment, even when the chemotherapy caused a degree of permanent brain damage.
.
Post operation, Kerry has completed her degree with first class honours and now works in the community as a mental health nurse working with mood disorders. She has had reconstructive surgery and is now getting her life back on track.
The book tells Kerry’s story in a matter of fact, sometimes irreverent way which will make the reader smile, provide hope and also give practical advice on finances, coping with hair loss and the effects of chemo. The book also tells how she master minded an escape attempt from hospital so that she could attend her graduation ball and how she coped with embarrassing body situations caused by her treatment.
“I wanted to write about my experience to tell people that life, with or without cancer, can be extremely funny if you know where to look. That is what makes my book so different,” said Kerry. “Some of the high spots were playing Pirates of the Caribbean with my son with the head scarves that I had bought to cover my bald head and getting my four year old son and his friends to go wild with clippers when they cut off my hair.”
Kerry’s book, “Double Decker Bus” named after something her doctor said to her “ The only way you will die is being hit by a Double Decker bus” will be launched on 18th of June 2-4pm at the Church Gallery in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria.
